First thing I see is SpongeBob doing this weird karate chop at a robot shaped like a toaster, then the screen switches and Patrick’s belly-flopping enemies into scrap metal. The game drops me right into Jellyfish Fields with a bunch of malfunctioning bots wandering around. And I’m already using bubble attacks to clear them out. It’s a full remake of that 2003 platformer, polished up with modern visuals but keeping all the ridiculous stuff like bungee jumping with your underwear. Plankton messed up his own plan and now robots are tearing up Bikini Bottom. I’m switching between SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy to clean up his mess.
Three Characters Who Actually Play Different
SpongeBob’s got his bubble wand and can double jump to reach higher platforms. Patrick throws stuff and uses his weight to break through cracked floors. Sandy’s the one I grab when there’s a long gap to cross because her lasso lets her glide and she hits harder in close combat. But the game makes you switch between them for specific obstacles, not just for variety. Some areas lock you into one character until you finish that section, which gets annoying when you’re stuck with Patrick and there’s a lot of precision jumping involved. The skills are different enough, but Patrick still can’t handle those narrow platforms worth a damn.
Robots That Look Like Kitchen Appliances
I’m fighting robots that look like they were built from spare parts in a junkyard, and half of them don’t even seem threatening until they explode. There’s this one type that just rolls toward you making beeping noises, and another that shoots lasers from what looks like a TV antenna. Boss fights happen in these enclosed arenas where you’re dodging attacks and waiting for the weak spot to open up. And nothing too complicated, but the spacing feels tight in some of the smaller rooms.
Where the Mod Comes In
Everything’s unlocked from the start, so I’m not grinding through levels just to access Sandy or specific areas. Controller support’s already built in, which is better than touch controls for the platforming sections. The visuals hold up pretty well for a remake, though some of the character animations during cutscenes look stiff compared to the actual gameplay. But I’ve run into a couple spots where the camera gets stuck behind a wall during the Mermalair boss fight.
