You’re supposed to learn enemy timing, unlock better gear between runs, and slowly chip away at the path forward. But the base game makes you earn every new weapon blueprint by grinding cells, the currency that evaporates the second you die a second time without banking it. The mod just unlocks the weapon pool and hands you enough cells to skip replaying the Prisoners’ Quarters for the ninth time.

Permadeath That Doesn’t Reset Everything

You do keep permanent upgrades between runs, like new paths through the castle or runes that let you smash through floors or climb walls. The levels themselves rotate through a fixed set of biomes, but the rooms inside them shuffle around, so you’re never quite running the same gauntlet twice. Combat is twitchy and punishing in a way that expects you to dodge-roll through attacks instead of tanking them. Three hits from a basic enemy in the second biome will shred half your health bar. And the game doesn’t pause when you open the map, which feels unnecessarily cruel when you’re bleeding out and trying to find the timed door.

Castlevania Showed Up Uninvited

The Return to Castlevania DLC stitches an entire Dracula storyline into the existing structure. It comes with Alucard narration and 51 original Castlevania tracks that feel jarringly nostalgic against Dead Cells’ usual synth-heavy soundtrack. You get the Vampire Killer whip, holy water bombs, and a handful of gothic outfits that let you cosplay as Simon Belmont while fighting werewolves in a castle that already had enough visual chaos. And it’s fan service that works if you grew up on Symphony of the Night, but it doubles the enemy roster with creatures that telegraph their attacks about half as clearly as the base game’s monsters do.
